new family. If a 200-acre farm is “developed” into a 200-lot subdivision, it could cost a county as much as $2,000,000 in capital outlays, while the county realizes only $26,000 to $68,000 in property taxes. School costs alone for such a subdivision could run as high as $140,000. ^ ,
What about “clean” industry? According to th& Farm Bureau, if such an outfit moves in and invest as much as $1,000,000, it will pay in local taxes just about enough to furnish the capital outlay need to provide services for a single family, per year.
THE FARM BUREAU argues that farming is the best industry this area could possibly have. It’s already here; it needs few “new” people’ it buys and trades locally; it doesn’t need elaborate highways; it requires little in the way of police and fire protection; it has a higher investment per employe than any industry except oil and chemical processing plants. And those are just economic arguments. Environmental, cultural, scenic and historic considerations are equally compelling. The Piedmont has already got the best industry there is.D
