“Many of these quilts were intended to be tangible memories. As families moved west, a friendship quilt became a treasured reminder of homes left behind,” she said.
Sometimes each block was signed by its maker, then embroidered so the signature would last.
AT TIMES, individual blocks were exchanged between friends. On other occasions, ladies presented their work at formal gatherings to the person being honored.
“Often girls would make a friendship quilt for an engaged friend as a wedding present,” the Tech Extension specialist said.
Friendship quilts can be personalized in many ways. The square itself is, of course, the product of a* friend’s skill and can include her signature, a brief noted, or a favorite recipe. Possibilities are endless, she said.D
