Thus, it is one thing for an educational bureaucracy to attempt to try to convince citizens that something like a kindergarten program is desirable, and it is something else for a state or federal agency to order the implementation of such a program, no matter what local conditions may prevail, or what local attitudes may be.
WE FEEL THE SAME way about various welfare proposals, road projects, regional planning concepts, water “reclamation” schemes, and all the other functions which are controlled so heavily nowadays by an entrenched, and growing, bureaucracy.
Let us all hope that the day will never come when any and every arbitrary program can be forced upon all citizens just because this or that bureaucracy thinks it’s best. A citizen’s right to say no is, after all, one of the things that this nation is supposed to be all about. Attempts to subvert those principals don’t always come in the guise of televised, dramatic, traumatic White House cirses; sometimes the danger has a more subtle, insiduous guise.
