All horses that are imported into Virginia must be accompanied by an official interstate health certificate which will indicate that all horses covered by such a certificate have been officially tested and negative for E.I.A. within the past twelve months. Equine Infectious Anemia is a virus disease that infects horses, mules and asses and may be acute or chronic. The virus is found in the blood, tissues and secretion of affected animals. The most frequent method of transmitting the disease is through the- transfer of blood from an infected to a susceptible animal. This can be done by the bite of stable flies, mosquitoes, etc. and the use of contaminated hypodermic needles and surgical instruments.

Rappahannock Bred Steers Top Show in Maryland— * Rappahannock bred steers continue to make a reputation for their growthiness and conformation. At the recent Maryland, Carrol County Steer Show, where 101 steers were shown, top honors went to 4-H’ers showing steers that were purchased last fall in Rappahannock. r Angus steers bred by Newbill Miller were overall Grand Champion and Reserve Champion of the show. One of Jim Massie’s steers was Champion Hereford, ' and an Angus steer from Dick Latham’s herd was first place in the middle weight class. □
