It was with interest that I read still another letter to the editor from Mr. Ed Harris last week.
I am not. as Mr. Harris purports to be, an expert on corporate finance and the inner workings of the Virginia Electric and Power Company. Nor am I, at the moment, interested in discussing whether putting marijuana smokers and “people.. .filching food from a chain store” in jail destroys equal justice under the law.
What I take exception to in Mr. Harris’s letter is his implication that Senator George Aldhizer II, who is up for re-election this year, is somehow guilty of a conflict of interest because his law firm represents Vepco. I challenge Mr. Harris to cite one instance in which Senator Aldhizer has used his considerable power in the State Senate to promote Vepco’s interest. I think it noteworthy that, in the one example cited by Mr. Harris, Senator Aldhizer voted against Vepco’s interest. Also, it is interesting that one of the other legislators attacked by Mr. Harris, Delegate J. Marshall Coleman of Staunton, is chief sponsor of legislation that would tighten up disclosure and registration requirements for all lobbyists, including Vepco.
