I think we only have to go as far as Manassas to see what can happen to a place that doesn’t control its growth. Growth can eat up our prime farmland with townhouses and highways, growth can destroy the scenic beauty of our mountains. ..
“It’s predicted that over the next 25 years, the United States will have to build a home, school, factory, power plant, etc. for every one that’s in existence today. In other words, in the next 25 years we’re going to have to build everything that’s been built in the United States over the past three centuries.
“The Planning District itself is the fourth fastest growing planning district in the state. This is a computer projection of urban regions in the United States in the year 200,” Oestreich said, pointing to a slide showing the eastern United States in which green coloring indicated the areas to be within the urban corridor by the year 2000. Much of the Rappahannock-Rapidan Planning District was included. This projection is based on a two child per family rate. There’s new evidence to suggest the birth rate is climbing up again, he said. “But the main point of this survey, though you could argue with the accuracy of the prediction, is that we’re going to see a lot of growth in the next 25 years and we should begin thinking about what we’re going to do with it. ’ ’
