OF Middleburg’s Red Fox Inn, she wrote that it “emanates charm but no one wants to spend anything on its upkeep.” Atmosphere is plentiful and supersedes the cooking at the Red Fox, Mrs. Thomas said, although she did think the “delicious pecan pie was made by fairy hands or possibly even the red fox himself on a moonless night.”
Welbourne, the home of Mrs. Holmes Morison west of Middleburg, is something special to experience, Mrs. Thomas said. “There is a big white columned porch in front and comfortable chairs in the living room that look like they’ve known each other a long time.” Mrs. Morison “runs a smooth household, taking inpaying guests and accomodating up to eight people at a time. She does not advertise and the only requirement for guests is that they come by personal introduction or otherwise privately referred.”
Mrs. Thomas visited the Wayside Inn in Middletown before going on to Richmond, Williamsburg, Yorktown and Smithfield.
