SOMETIMES, encounters with Big Government turn out the right way—so seldom that the occasion calls for comment, occasionally they do, anyway. The latest instance to come to our attention involves a situation that developed in relation to the Rappahannock Sheriff’s department, and which was commented, upon in this space several weeks ago.
The situation was this: Because of some remote bureaucratic ruling, small counties such, as Rappahannock were threatened with being ineligible for federal funds to use in upgrading their criminal justice activities. Since they couldn’t afford to have officers on duty around-the-clock —not just on-call, but on-duty— they were not to be eligible for grant funds.
Don’t look for any logic in that situation—you’d think grant assistance would go first to the areas that were too small or too poor to afford basic operations, but that’s not the way bureaucratic minds work.
