to consider farm work as an honorable and worthwhile future for them selves. To group one of the most important and valuable occupations of this or any other society in the same category as “unspecified laborer” and street cleaner is to do an injustice to one of this entire nation’s most valuable assets one which will become increasingly important as world population pressures increase.
THE United States is conventionally regarded as an industrial nation, and yet its leading exports are agricultural products. We lead the world in food production, thanks not only to a land blessed by ample arable acres, but by a farm management and labor force unsurpassed for productivity and innovation.
If those who are in charge of our public schools regard farm work as something to be done only by those on the bottom of the work force scale, and the children respond to this negative attitude, then the United States could find itself in as much trouble with its food supply as so many other areas of the globe already have.
