New disability
rules are urged
Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson has introduced a bill to reduce the waiting period for commencement of disability benefits under Social Security, and to make benefits retroactive to the date the eligible disability began.
“The present five-month waiting period before a disability benefit application may be considered creates substantial additional financial hardship for many unemployable disabled persons and their families,” Robinson noted in a statement and added: —
“The waiting period was placed in the law to make reasonably certain that a disability was of such severity as to preclude gainful work, and that it could be expected to continue indefinitely. I do think, however, that a onemonth delay before beginning processing of a claim should be sufficient. In addition, once the date at which total and presumably permanent disability commenced has been determined, I believe retroactive payments would be in order.”
