couragement. It is so important to have people to really talk to who know exactly what you are experiencing, because they have been through it themselves.”
As the facilitator, Bob Treanor helps members of the group get in touch with their feelings, and helps make it easier for people to open up. “It has been a delightful experience for me. The group is made up of cancer survivors, and they are a very upbeat group,” he said. “I think it makes a big difference if they have a good attitude and if they can meet with a group of people who are there or have been there. The Cancer Support Group is my favorite group to work with,” he added.
The three main purposes of the American Cancer Society are to educate, provide services and do fundraising. According to Helen Smith, president of the local chapter, one out of four people’s lives will be touched by cancer. In Virginia, 24.000 to 26,000 are estimated to die from cancer annually, and it is the leading killer of people over the age of 50.
One out of nine women are expected to get breast cancer. Mammograms are especially important for women 40 and over as a way to detect the disease in the early stages, when it is easier to treat.
Smoking cigarettes causes 390.000 deaths in this country annually. Out of 100 smokers, one will be murdered, two will die as a result of traffic accidents, and 25 will die from tobacco use, usually lung cancer. Cancer of the kidney is also common with smokers.
One statistic that is encouraging is that fifty percent of all people diagnosed with cancer will continue to lead a normal life after treatment. Educating people about cancer has helped more and .more survive the disease.
“I am really proud that Ester Settle started the Cancer Support Group,” said Helen Smith.
The group Tnpets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the mdnth from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Washington: The meeting takes place in either the parish hall or downstairs, whichever is available. There have been between five and nine people attending the meetings held so far. New members are welcome to show' up at meetings. The next one is scheduled for Jan. 11.
