. Rappahannock Ncw> Staff Writer ' Most people in Rappahannock County know David “Scratch” Clanagan as a musician. He plays guitar ,ai)d is the lead singer with the gospel group Free Spirit. Not only does he have music in his soul, he also has art in his soul.
Mr. Clanagan had always enjoyed painting as a child, but had ne ver been serious about it until two years ago. In that brief period of time, he has been very successful at seUing his paintings. During 1992, ftp sold 15 paintings, and in 1993 he so|d seven. Most have been sold by ftim personally, but some have also been sold in galleries. He shows his work in the Framecraft Gallery on Main Street in Warrenton, and at the'Comer Gallery on Main Street in Front Royal. , * v -- His favorite subjects to paint are bams and mills. He approached Ms. Marshall one time when he had trouble painting a shadow in one'df his paintings. With • her'help, he learned how to do it. , - The first painting that Mr. Clanagan did was of a barn and outbuildings in the snow. “Everyone who saw it said I should have it .checked out by a professional. So I showed it to Dan Lewis at the Middje Street Gallery. He said he .thought I had potential,” said Mr. Clanagan. On the same day he was
