Major Ed Streapy of the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office handed in his resignation papers the day after incumbent sheriff John Henry Woodward lost his reelection bid to Gary Settle on Nov. 7.
Though he feels that he still has a few good years in him as a law enforcement officer, “Because of the results of the current election 1 felt it was a good decision,” he said. If Sheriff Woodward had been re-elected, Major Streapy said he would have remained with the Sheriff’s Office.
He was hired 16 years ago by then Sheriff William Buntin, after having worked for 21 1/2 years in the Alexandria Police Department. He has two university degrees in police administration and is a certified fingerprint expert. “1 just made a fingerprint case a couple of weeks ago,” he said, by examining the latent prints and identifying them. He then confronted the subject who gave him a confession.
Major Streapy said that he feels that Sheriff Woodward has built a fine organization with dedicated young personnel. “I am proud to be associated with the Sheriffs Office. I love them all. Captain Mitch Hitt does a fine job as the administrator of the jail,” said Major Streapy.
