Abraham Lincoln was able to express the elegance of the American system of government in poetically simple terms which anyone can understand. “By the frame of the Government under which we live,” he said after becoming President with only 40 percent of the popular vote, “this same people have wisely given their public servants but little power for mischief, and have with equal wisdom provided for the return of that little to their own hands at very short intervals.”
We can turn to the “World News” section of our newspaper and at a glance see a world in turbulent upheaval because of violent changes in power — Bosnia, Haiti, the Middle East, Rwanda — and we see also the nations where the tyranny is so great the people cannot overthrow their government even by revolution — Iran, Libya, Cuba, China. “At such a time in history,” said Dwight Eisenhower in his first inaugural, “we who are free must proclaim anew our faith. This faith is the abiding creed of our fathers. It is our faith in the deathless dignity of man, governed by eternal moral and natural laws. . . It is because We, all of us, hold to these principles that the political changes accomplished this day do not imply turbulence, upheaval or disorder. Rather this change expresses a purpose of strengthening our dedication and devotion to the precepts of our founding documents, a conscious renewal of faith in our country and in the watchfulness of a Divine Providence.”
The real victory of each campaign season is that win, lose or draw, w ith each election we re-affirm the divinely inspired founding documents of our country and recognize that our real strength is that we are now, as we have been throughout our nation's history . One Nation Under God.
