Mr. Ngwa moved right to the students' own lives. Mr. Kengmo told the students they were all geniuses. He asked them to shout: “I am a genius!”
“There is only one you.” he said. “You are unique. Nobody can replace you. You are a genius!"
He extolled them to love themselves. to love the bodies they're inregardless of their color, “black, brown, white, blue, purple or yellow.”
“You must respect yourself first, so that other people will respect you. You must treat people with respect, so that they will treat you the same way.”
To the best of Mr. Ngwa's drums, Mr. Kengmo mimed cutting tall grass (we would probably call it hay) with a machete. When he was young, he said, he once tried to do a shoddy job of cutting the grass by simply taking a swipe at the top.
But his father spanked him. returned him to the field and told him: “You will never solve ybitr problems by cutting at the top. You must go to the bottom and cut. Then you will cut a path through your grass and you will be able to walk easily through it."
Mr. Kengmo said the lesson was: “Get to the root of vour problems. Bydoing so, you will cut a path out of them."
He talked about respecting our ancestors — the people who went before us and cut a path for us to walk on. '
The performers made it clear that in Africa society , the older generation plays a.vital role in educating the young and that they are honored for their role.
