As years go by we think and talk often about the other couple, worry about their relationship, their plana, their future. All these issues play ou t in Wallace Stegners brilliant prose.
The reader accompanies the narrator through adult hie. witnessing the apparent roller coaster of the Lang marriage and its interface with the narrator and his wife. And. as in our own Bees, despite momentary discord. the long-term friendships mean the most, waiting there for us when times are tough, seeking us when support and nurture are needed.
grown to know and love are not perfect, they have their admirable characteristics and their undesirable ones, but our time together has connected us in a way that cannot be unraveled, nor do we want it to be. Thus Stegner depicts the characters here, so that by the conclusion of the novel, we find ourselves knowing and caring about these imperfect people and feeling reluctant to leave them.
