With fell’s official arrival on Monday; we are reminded of one of the great miracles of nature going on around us - the departure of many of our nesting birds to warmer wintaring grounds, and the passage of birds from more northern latitudes through Virginia an their own journey south.
Without map, compass, or GPS, they travel unerringly hundreds or even thousands of miles. Some, like Eastern phoebes and American kestrels, move only as far as absolutely necessary to avoid frigid weather. But many others, from warblers to shorebirds, travel to the Gulf of Mexico and far beyond.
