Riding the winds
Many birds move south only during favorable weather. When cold fronts sweep down from Canada with strong northwest winds, small warblers like American Redstarts and Common Yellowthroats ride the tail winds south. Weighing only one-third of an ounce, these little balls of avian energy need all the help they can get.
Even large hawks use these favorable winds, moving along the crest of the Blue Ridge in flocks called “kettles.” Seeing a kettle of Broad-winged Hawks is one of Price’s hopes for the day.
