As we have written here before, we support the tougher new strictures of the Chesapeake Bay Clean Water and Ecosystem Restoration Act. That doesn’t mean we aren't supportive of farmers, nor does it mean we are cold to their plight.
We've at least intimated here before that, unlike so many others nowadays, we don’t find every suggestion of a tax increase repulsive, and cleaning up the bay for all of us is likely going to require some sort of tax increase that we all pay. Cleaning up the bay needs to become less of a blame game and more of a common effort; it is just the right thing to do, and it benefits us all.
We simply can’t keep driving farmers out of business because we task them to clean up the bay for all of us at their sole expense. That, and we like to eat, too.
