Thanksgiving.

One of the nanny things we have to be thankful for is Thanksgiving Day. *
When the Pilgrims came across the* ocean to have religious freedom here in thin country, they landed at Plymouth Rock in December, 1620. This country was bleak and desolate and the Pilgrims suffered greatly, but these brave people were not discouraged. They built houses for themselves, made friends with the Indians who showed .them how to shoot fish with arrows, and they learned many ether things from the Indians, too.
When the Pilgrims harvested their crops and found there was an-Abundance of drain, there was much happiness in the Plymouth Colony. It seemed to our Pilgrim Fathers there was so great a cause for thankfulness that they made a special time of rejoicing, and Governor Bradford proclaimed a day of Thinksgiring. .
He sent out men m search of game and they returned with large numbers of wild fowl which'were mostly turkeys. That was the first public appearance of our famed Thanksgiving turkey. This feast lasted nearly a week and a number of friendly Indians, with their chief, Massasoit, were invited to' share in the. festivities. After this tims the Pilgrims hid other similar days of Thanksgiving but the holiday was not regularly observed. The .first Thanksgiving proclamation issued by a president was after the Revolutionary War, when President Washington appointed—November 26, 1783 as a day of general Thanksgiving and prayer. It was President Lincoln who final- - ly established our Thanksgiving .Day as a permanent and regular holiday which was to (be the last ■’ Thursday in November.
