Milk-Feed Ratio

On Downgrade

The value of Virginia’s milk, in relation to the amount of dairy feed it would buy, dropped in June; but State dairmen still were in a better position than the average for the United States.

Ben P. Morgan, Jr., dairy marketing specialist at V.P.I., said Virginia dairymen could buy only 112 pounds of dairy feed with 100 pounds of milk in June, as compared to 117 pounds of feed in May. This was about 10 pounds below the average for June, and one pound below June a year ago.

However, the average United States dairyman could buy only 92 pounds of dairy feed with 100 pounds of milk.

Dairymen in South Atlantic states were in a more favorable position. They could buy 118 pounds of feed with 100 pounds of milk;

Morgan says dairymen can expect little relief in feed prices during the next year. The price support for the 1950 wheat crop in Virginia—$2.24 a bushel, 4c above last year—will have its effect. And other factors, such as an expected shorter crop and increased insect damage, will support higher feed costs.

Prices received for all Virginia milk in June averaged 20c per 100 pounds below May, but 20c per 100 pounds above June a year ago. Morgan explains that' this year’s higher average price is largely due to a 10c per 100 pounds higher manufactured milk price, and a larger percentage of Virginia’s total production in the higher-priced fluid channels. Those two factors have raised the price for all milk even though the fluid milk price is down some from last year.
