Byrd Picnic at ‘Rosemont’
Several Rappahannock citizens were on hand Saturday to join with about 3000 others as guests of Senator Byrd at his annual picnic at “Rosemont,” near Berryville. •
Many distinguished guests were present, including representatives of several foreign nations, who had been in Washington, D.C., last week for the international apple convention.
Governor Battle spoke first on the program of the afternoon, saying that a while back he would have welcomed the opportunity to greet such a group of people, but since a future ejection was no point of emphaair in Ms position, he was going to let the others do the talking. ^, v,,

Senator Byrd spoke on the seri. ousness of the war situation and reiterated his position in standing firm fop any measures to promote, support' to any war effort. The Senator told the story of the sta, tistician in Washington who had stated that he, Senator Byrd, had * voted 56% with the Republicans during the past year, sad only 44% with the Democrats- “This I deny,” said the Senator, “My ' name begins with “B” and I vote first, the Republicans vote with me.” He wrung quick applause when be said he had always been a Democrat, but he had been and was a Jeffersonian Democrat—not a New Deal Democrat.
