He was in Manila at the outbreak fo World War II, in submarine work. Shortly thereafter, he was assigned to the staff of the Commander, Air, South Pacific, as communications officer during the tense early days of the Navy’s carrier battles in that part Of the world.
Shifting from undersea and aviation duty to the surface Navy, hi Cdwe to Mlathi in tiie first half ™ of 1943 for duty at the Navy’s sub-chaser Training Center. Later that same year he was sent to the west coast and put two salvage ships in commission, one after another, feting as their commanding officer. During this time he participated.-in the Okinawa campaign. The McClelland played a role in this campaign, too.
Commander Dodson’s next command was the l/SS Navajo, a seagoing tug, and in 1947, he assumed command of the McClelland, then based in Jacksonville, as a Naval Reserve training ship. The new inspector-instructor estimates that he trained on two week cruises on board the McClelland more than 5,009 Naval Reservists during the three yean, he was her skipper.
