As there are no stone walls in Guatemala, from whence the long-tails were brought to Massachusetts, the animals had no inherited instinct for dealing with them. When a long-tail encountered a stone wall, his only recourse was to follow it, hoping for a break in this barrier which would permit him to pass through. He ran himself to death.
With the death of the long-tails, the hopes of the foxhound breeders are dashed low. They had hoped to bring about a cross with the} longtail and thus create a superior strain of foxhound.
As there has been no success in the efforts to cross the beaver and retriever, to create a trout dog which would gnaw down a streamside tree ani retrieve th* angler's fly from the branches, the fox-hound-long-tail cross might also have been doomed to failure.
