Flowers should bring out the lovely and the gentle in everyone. When the group giving a flower show has a good spirit and the judges are well chosen the flower show becomes a thing of joy even to the losers. As Whittier says “Beauty seen is never lost.” (Flowers and poetry just simply go together!)
Of course there are those who feel that competition is not a good thing and a display of arrange* ments a waste of time. But for most people, a flower show is a lovely thing to look at and exciting to be a part of. It emphasizes the important place flowers may play in anyone’s life. By and large, it encourages good sportsmanship and teaches the \felue of cooperation among the members who put it on. Sometimes, in small shows, it is necessary to point out that the real success of a flower show cannot be measured by committee work alone, no real success of a flower show cannot be measured by committee work alone, no matter how zealous—and no one should ever disparage thCs# very necessary efforts! But always there must be the Mary’s and the Martha’s, and what would a flower show be without exhibits,
It is the exhbits which “feed our souls” — and the Rappahannock show did its part to renew our spirits with beauty in this time of great conflicts. Its many observers agreed that flower show is a good thing for the chance it gives for expression of our feeling of beauty; and undoubtedly a beautiful arrangement can be as much a masterpiece as a beautiful painting.
