k Hie fundamental purpose of the amateur flower show is to educate the participants and the^ public which attends it, according to the Handbook for Flower Shows by the National Council of State Gar* den Clubs, Inc. Its definite purpose is to raise the standards of horticulture and floriculture in the community and in the home
Amateur gardeners can be good horticulturists, and are more likely to become so if they are encouraged to compete with friends in raising or finding fine material and in using it to the best advantage. They may also learn, by taking part in a good flower show, the fine points of difference between the ordinary and the distinguished.
Another purpose of the show is to develop the aesthetic sense of exhibitors and visitors alike by skillfully displaying beautiful flowers and foliage and by fine arrangements. There are many persons who are surprisingly ignorant of the infinite variety of plant material to be found in a well-kept garden or along waysides or in woodlands. Especially in arrangement classes, the love of beauty inherent in every individual is fedi and nurtured.
