It was interesting to observe the splendid work of the judges in the Rappahannock show. These competent ladies, Mrs. A. W. Yowell of Peola Mills, Mrs. C. B. Graves of Luray, and Mrs. W. F. McComb of Bluemont, did much to make the show a worthwhile thing. It was generally felt that they went “by the book” and did not coddle .the exhibitor in any way. This in itself is a big compliment to the Rappahannock show, for It had numerous exhibit! which . were worthy of the judges' most careful attention to the rules, which they had mastered by careful training.
Sweepstakes for the shows are determined by the committee and not the concern of the judges, act cording to the State Garden Clubs' Handbook. The highest prize is usually awarded to the winner of the greatest number of first prize points, and the second prize to the winner of the second highest number. In this case, judged on a qualitative basis, Mrs. L. J. Turner would have been the winner. Her score was a total of 21 points with four blue ribbons among them. The club this year put the emphasis upon quantity rather than quality, since it was the first show and was felt that once exhibitors realized the satisfaction of exhibiting, would be encouraged to continue. The winner of the greatest number of points from blue, red, and white ribbons with a total of 24 points was Mrs. J. G. ReVercomb, of Peola Mills. Her many friends are delighted to congratulate Mrs. Revercomb as winner of the hand painted tray which was this year’s sweepstakes prize. With two club members making this splendid showing, others had best begin now if they aspire to “show" these two next year!
