High bush blu«berries may he expected to thrive in Southwestern Virginia if they are grown under a sawdust mulch and given ample nitrogen.
Reporting on teste underway at ' Virginia Experiment Station, Researchers R. C. Moore and G. D. Oberle say blueberry plants grown under mulch and given about twice the usual amount of nitro-. gen fertilizer produced a good crop of fruit last year, and a heavy crop is in prospect for 1950.
In other parts of the State, it has been noted that use of sawdust mulch and nitrogen appreciably increases the fruit crop.

Lime Any Time

Farmers of Rappahannock county are advised to lime their land any time now even though it may be some time yet before winter cover crops are seeded. H. S. Barksdale, chairman of the PMA county committee says lime benefits land most when it has had a chance to become thoroughly mixed after several cultivations.
The chairman added that taking delivery of lime at this time of year instead of in spring helps to spread out the operating load of lime plants. *
It’s also about time for farmers to begin checking on conservation. practices which they plan bo carry out this fall. He suggests that farmers not delay in making arrangements for seed and fertilizer in connection with fall seeded crops which qualify for pay- ^ ments under the Agricultural Conservation Program. . ^
