“I visited one landowner in Shiraz who has been influenced by Christianity and 'has been doing a great deal for his 1}enanta. He has brought in a young Christian, doctor to care for his people and is building model houses supplied with electricity. I enclose a picture of the houses (they are in a block) and of his house, and as you can s(ee it is father pretty. The stack in the foreground is alfalfa, cut for the? stock. The men were cutting it when I made the picture, but do not show. They squatted on the ground and usied a knife somewhat larger than a pocket knife, somewhat smaller than a sickle. You can imagine how much they got cut in a day!
“I enclose a picture of the migratory tribes we encountered on our way to Jthe Persian Gulf. There are about 600,000 in this particular tribal group, who pasture along the coast in winter, then move up in the summer to altitudes of 6 to 8 thousand feet. The ascent of the plateau is one of the steepest in the world, and it is a real feat to get up it with all their household gear.
“We shall be here until December, but then shall get home as quickly as possible and see our farm and all our friends in Washington. I need not tell you that we miss you all very much.
I suppose I should say some* thing about the political situation (here, since the papers are so full of it at home, but I didn't leave Washington, D.C., to get into politics and we have been staying away from the capital of Iran as much as possible. In the provinces things are much more tranquil, as they are at home, and we have felt little of the tension you have read about. However, there were a few times in the past month or so when iwe were just a little worried—one being the time when the munitions dump in Shiraz blew up and everyone thought a revobo

“But next day all was calm. We lived through a big demonstration of the Communists in Isfahan, which besides being the home of ancient glory of Iran is also the main industrial city here (the in* dustrial population numbers however, only about 10,000 workers in textile mills and their families.)
