Sperryville Rabbitry
Is One of Few In State
“Pankey’s Bunnyville” at Sperryville is one of few rabbitries in the State and the only rabbit business. of its kind in northern Virginia.
Mrs. Janie Jarvis started the business about three months ago at her home. Mrs. Carroll Menefee, and Farnk Jarvis help with the business and Trixie, the family white collie, serves at watchman and general caretaker when there is danger of the rabbits being disturbed.
Mrs. Jarvis can’t recall exactly how she became interested in the rabbit-raising business.' She remembers reading afrticles about fancy rabbits, and she knows she got bulletins from VPI but the idea more or less grew as her interest grew.
In the hutches (the name oil the cages the rabbits are kept in) at the Menefee home in Sperry^ ville now are about 44, including all sizes, red rabbits, some white ones with black trimmings,, a .white one with grey trimmings (near the Maltese cat color) and one beautiful satiny black rabbit with a white nose. The rabbits range in age from a few days* without their eyes open, up to) the true grandfather size, weighing 16 pounds.
All of the rabbits are pedigreed and those not registered are eligible for registration. They are mostly white and red New Zealand stock. The giant size of the grown rabbits shows immediately that they are not the general run of “Mollie Cottontail” and “Peter Rabbit” variety that is seen along the roadside or given at Easter time for the Easter bunny.
