C. R. Wire, owner of “The Shade” and C. C. Zinn, manager, assisted by soil conservation technicians have developed ^complete soil and water conservation plan for the farm. The farm and build- ‘ ings are beipg developed for a' beef cattle unit. Mr. Wire intends' to make “The Shade” one of the show places of Rappahannock, as - it' once was d number of years' ago. • ■ .. }<
Much of the farm work is well underway in establishing the grass' program. Mixtures of Sudan Grass, Millet and Soy Beans were, seeded last spring in contour. stripe for ensilage. Alfalfa, *nd! grass mixtures have been seeded j on many of the strips to provide ^ensilage and hay for winter feeding. Land for growing the hay and epsilage crops was selected according to land use capability. •By this is meant, “using the land for the purpose for which it is best suited and treating it accord• ingto its needs,” for the particular crops.' '!
Pastures are likewise being developed to increase carrying ca-' pacity along the lines of correct land use. Seedings for pastura will be designed to cover the long-' est period possible. Mixtures ini' eluding Ladino Clover, Alsike Clover, Orchard Grass, and Ky. M Fescue will be used. Legume and grass mixtures are selected to tlr particular field conditions- >
In connection with the overall conservation plan on “The Shade” Mr. Wire has constructsd a system of open ditch drains to reclaim wet areas that have in the past been non-productive. * ^‘The Shade” has already taken on the “new look” to all those ; familiar with It during recent! ye***- „‘ ' ! 4-1
