Some years back, ater a study of schools tn the United Stater rated Virginia in 47th place, a newspaper in Richmond came out ■with an editorial headed “Thank God for Arkansas,” since that state's listing at the bottom saved Virginia from occupying the lowest possible place.
Teachers got a laugh out of the! editorial, and ft furnished enough! material for lectures to get thef state pretty ashan|ed of itself. Work was already in progress to improve the educational standing of the state, but efforts were redoubled. — _- _ .A recent editorial in a Richmond paper tells of another rating, for the state. Virginia now owns the questionable distinction of ranking 6th in the State in the number of stills captured and destroyed within the borders. The editorial explains why there are so many means for distilling the famous “mountain dew” by giving the reasons: the topography of the Old Dominion, with its hills and vales and streams, is conducive to location of stills; there are many urban communities in various locations to absorb the output and furnish demand for the supply; it’s the only way many families can make a living from their poor land to buy food and school books; and then, too, there are families that point iwith pride to generations of making a special concoction and it has been the means of livelihood for too long to tmalke them readjust themselves! just because some governing body in a far-away city made a new set of laws.
