; The first season of the Bias Ridge Husie Festival's summer camp is over.
(It was thought to open this Story with “The shouting and the tumult dies, The captains and the kings depart. . but someone might take offense and quote the paper as saying the soloists shouted and the orchestra was a tumult, and that the students, the instructor, and the conductor strutted like army brass. That’s the way most tales get started, and with just about as 'much; foundation as that.)
If the success of the first sea-* son of the festival can be judged by the pleasure given to many, it may be termed a complete success. The students had a “grand time," so they said ; three weeks in the friendly town, enjoying the music, and enjoying the association with other students interested in music. Many people enjoyed the concerts; shown bythe fact that about 600 attended the first, 000) the second, and about 1200 the third. If the people hadn’t enjoyed the music, they wouldn't have spread the word around so that others could enjoy the next concert.
It is to be hoped that another: year the Blue Ridge Music Festival will keep up the good start and add to the young enterprise.
Though there probably wasn't ;■ much money to start off, the sum-, mer camp has many assets: there is a need of a summer music camp in this section, and attendance at the concerts proved that the people enjoy and approve of a summer festival. Tanglewood, in. Massachusetts, is beyond the trav- / el and pocketbook of many an ambitious music atuednt; and* the nearest other camp of this nature is in North Carolina. The location —in Rappahannock, easily-accessi.-— ble, is ideal. AS for the attend7Since at the concerts, people insurrounding territory welcomed a bit of fresh music—not canned-— which meant an accompanying drive through beautiful countryside, rather than the tedious trip to the city, which most of us must make to hear a concert. ,
There are many advantages to having a Blue Ridge Festival sum„ mer camp, and it is hoped that -with the years the project may grow.
