After studying several method* for treating fence posts, VPI foresters say the one best suited to 'Virginia farm conditions is that of soaking sap-pine or secondgrowth oak in a solution of penitachlorophenol. Besides cutting in half the cost of replacement, using preservatives makes it possible to use posts of small diameter. Since they do not rot, it is not necessary to allow extra size to make up for rotting.
