Inspired with the desire to see an Episcopal church here, Rev. Willoughby Newton Claybrook started a movement to build one. The generosity of Mr. Harry Smoot made this possible. Our little church in its simplicity is well built, the work of the veteran builder of Rappahannock, George Hawkins. « , ^ > The first rector of the new church was the Rev. W. Norwood Tillinghast. The first members were Dr. and Mrs. Amiss, Mr. Cooper, and Miss Louise O’Bannon. Rectors following Mr. Tillinghast were Rev. Arthur Gray, Sr., Rev. William Marshall (student). Rev. John Lloyd (chaplain in Army, World War I). Two Englishmen held services in the war period. Rev. Churchill Gibson of the Luray Parish held services here for a time. Then Rev. E. H. Vogt, Rev. Frank Cox, Rev. Carter Henry Harrison (student), Rev. Lawrence Brent, and Rev. Francis Allison. ? St Paul’s was demolished in 1929 tornado that biew away the best part of Woodville. The communicants of this church now became a part of Emmanuel. In the devoted care of the beloved Francis Allison, the church took on new life. The pretty churchyard with the barberry hedge will ever bring him to mind. In his ministry the Guild was organized. Rev. Range came next, then Rev. Wilfred Waterhouse. At the present time Dr. W. G. Pendleton is rector of Bromfield Parish. ; The officers of the church have served long and faithfully. ^ Mr.J. R. Cooper was treasurer for more than thirty, years, serving „ v until his death. Harry Trescott succeeded him and served until his death. Mks. Fred Schaeffer is the third treasurer in fifty years. _ The long and faithful service of Frank Fitzhugh as sexton, with his wife, Jenny, as helper, deserves especial mention. New residents of the county coming into the church of Emmanuel are Mr. and Mrs. S. E..Honing and the family of Col. William Williamson. Mrs. Hening is president of the Auxiliary. -The vestry consists of three members, William L. Yancey, Fred Schaeffer, and James W. Fletcher.
