Apple Purchase Program
\ The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced yesterday that h will purchase frith apples from Virginia’s 1951 crop now being t picked.
The program will be handled by the Production and Marketing -Administration and will commence ; at once, according to C. D. Jordan, State PMA head.
'Purchases will be confined strictly to apples grading U. S. (No. 1 or better, and of the foll lowing varietiesGrimes Golden and Jonathan in sise 214- inch minimum diameter, or 215 or larger by count; Golden Delicious, ’ Borne Beauty, Stayman, and York - , Imperial in sise 21 inch minimum, or 180 and larger. These are the principal marketable varieties in f Virginia at this season.
The purchase prices which the v USDA has set for apples packed and loaded f.o.b. shipping point are $1.60 per bushel for sise 214 < inch, and $1.20 for the 2-1 inch '£ fruit. However, on both sises the J grower is aUopred a premium of 10 cents a bushel for wrapped placed packs and for tray packs.
Under the program growers ' ? may offer apples in bushel bask^ ets, boxes, wirebound crates, or . fibreboard boxes provided such containers are in good, clean, us•ble condition and lidded. Round bottom baskets or fibreboard containers must be new. . The fall purchase program will continue through the end of the year, Jordan said, but he announced that all offers from prospective vendors must be made by November 11, 1961, to be considered. He further stated that acceptances , by the USDA will be limited strictly to the outlets available, • — wrhich include the School Luneh JProgram and certain non-profit institutions. tv
