ARMY DESERTER, AWOL, CAUGHT IN ORANGE COUNTY.
A "notorious” Army deserter was captured Saturday after five years of hiding in the heavily wooded mountains near Gordons*
He was identified as Everett C. Atkins, ii, a former resident of Gordonsville, who, according to Army officials, deserted June 4, 1946.
Richard D. Auerbach, special 'i agent in charge of the Richmond’ office of the Federal Bureau of (Investigation, described him as "one of the most notorious deserters in the files of* the FBI.” f
Atkins was arrested as he I walked along* a mountain path armed with a .410-gauge shotgun. According to Auerbach, he a apparently was healthy after his five years in the forests, in fact, was “husky a bear.” -
The arrest came at 4 p,m. Saturday after FBI agents, Virginia ■State Polie, and two Gordonsville police officers began a close watch , Over a lumber camp near Gordonsville. Auerbach explained that ttia watch was started at midnight after it was learned that Atkins was in contact with his wife, who was living in the lum* f her camp. - .. y 'The day of his capture was the first time law enforcement offi, eers had seen Atkins since he. deserted. But several times during the past five years they had erossed his trail, Auerbach said.
The agents knew Atkins was hiding in the mountains, Auerbach said, because they would find makeshift lean-tos which provided Us only shelter. For food, he had to pely on squirrels and other game, the agents said.
