Ashes of the late George Freeman Pollock, who was a founder of Shenandoah National Park, will be scattered from a cliff at the dedication of Pollock Knob in his his memory on Sunday.
The 3/85G-foot peak chosen to bear his name rises above Timber Hollow Overlook on Skyline Drive. It is situated nearly a mile south* . of Skyland. ■ ( . / ' .
Senator Byrd, who was Governor when Mr. Pollock campaigned successfully for establishment of Shenandoah National Park, will ‘deliver the dedicatory address.
The ceremony will begin at 1 o’clock near the new Skyland ' Dining Room. The ashes will be scattered from a cliff behind Birmingham Cottage.
Chairman of the program is' Harry B. Dyche, mayor of Luray. Other officials who will participate are Ronald F. Lee, assistant director of the National Park Service; J. Frank Schairer, first supervisor of trails, Potomac Appa*^ lacbian Trail Club; CoL Robert J. Benchoff, head of Massanutten Military Academy; and Ed W. Lauck, member of the Virginia Development Commission.
Mr.. Pollock died in 1949, after devoting more than 64) years to the development of the Blue Ridge area as a tourist attraction. He first visited Skyland in 1886, and in 1884 founded Stony Man Camp which later became known as Sky- , land. , .
