Reaching For The Fiddle

There was once a generation of Romans that occupied in the world of their time almost exactly the same position that we occupy in the world of our day. They were the richest, the most powerful, the most influential race on earth. Like ourselves they had a chance to make fundamental descisions that would have led to' progress and happiness. Instead, they “reached for a fiddle- and plunged the world into 700 years known as the Dark Ages—a period when human progress was at an * almost complete standstill.

There is much evidence on the current scene that we are following the pattern set by the Romans. At a time when people throughout the world look toward our shores as their last hope of escape from the brute force and human slavery that is Communism, they find us foolishly toying with the idea that we can have our cake and eat it too. They find us dodging and shriking our responsibilities by asking the government to do for us things that we could and should do for ourselves. They see us, as unpaid Judases, undermining our matchless system of free enterprise in advocating socialistic - government ownership of our productive facilities. They see Con-_ gyeasmen, elected to represent the best interests of the people, jumpfog through the hoop like monkeys in a three ring circus whenever some power bloated bureaucrat cracks the whip. They can see men who should be statesmen, playing politics nwith the safety and welfare of 150 million Amer
