Regardless of the manner m which he is remembered, Benjamin Franklin can be listed as one of America’s greatest men. His life has given richness to many who have followed him.
As a very fine sample of Ben Franklin’s wisdom, which has come down to us, observe the following bit of his writing, penned in 1748, 204 years ago:
“Friends and Neighbors, the Taxes are indeed very heavy, and if those laid on by the Government were the only Ones we had to pay, we might more easily discharge them; but we have many others, and much more grievious to some of us, . . . We are taxed twice as much by our Idleness, three times) as much by our Pride, and four - times as much by our Folly; and from these Taxes the Commissioners cannot ease or deliver us.”
