My education would be seriously neglected were it not for the newspapers. To prevent my growing up in ignorance, Sunday’s paper added this wealth to my meager store:
“The spinach plant, a native of Siberia, was introduced in England more than three centuries ago, according to ths Canadian press.”
Siberia has been referred to often as a place of torture, but now it gains the reputation of furnishing spinach to make kids throughout the world suffer—“eat your spinach, dear, or no dessert!”
Of course, the whole thing may bo just a claim for another “first” for Russia, since they say they invented and discovered everything else before the rest of the •world knew about it.
The time element in this item is also of interest. Back in the 1500’s, there may have been epidemics of small-pox and all kinds of plagues, but at least the folks hadn’t heard of spinach. Let’s see, the Pilgrims left England about ■that time; the history books say it. was because of religious persecution, but who knows? it may have been because they heard that spinach was .being brought to the country /rom Siberia, and they may have deckled to face the perils of an untried land rather than stomach spinach. That would make good material for a graduate thesis; at least it might be a new approach to an old topic.*
