Though often in my life I have had cause to wonder if the Jeffersonian term of democracy . is entirely correct, nevertheless, I still stick to it in faith. The opinion of the bulk of the cornmen man should be the law to govern all.
It is upon this faith in the aver, age man—his ability to know hia own mind and to manage his own affairs—that our democratic government is set up. The statement of the fair market value of his personal property is the privilege of the owner and taxpayer. What his neighbor pays is none of his business, and personally, I think it violates his rights of privacy to pry into his personal papers. I know what the machinery in my printing business is worth; I shall declare it honestly to the best of my ability and sign my name to it; and I have no desire for my business to be on public examination by those who cannot possibly know as much about my own business as I do. »
A fair distribution of taxes has always been a goal in our nation. No doubt our tax laws are far from perfect, but the two suggestions do not appear to answer all the problems. (This is a personal opinion, but all laws represent a majority of opinion.) The suggestion of having the Board of Supervisors examine the tax declaration seems a violation of rights of privacy and places them in a position of judgment rather than a position of governing body.
