'For Shipped Cattle
Remember to see about a “passport” if you have an interest in a farm animal coming into or going out of Virginia, the State Veterinarian reminded farmers today.
If you import cattle without a health certificate, it may mean your whole herd will be quarantined, according to Dr. W. L. Bendix.
Shipping without proper certificates may cost hundreds of dollars in state fines, 'delays in shipping and quarantine loses at the point of origin.
Most states, including Virginia protect their own animals ffrom diseases by requiring that newcomers have proper health certificates iwhen they cross the state line.
In the case of cattle, state veterinarians are concerned primarily about Bang’s disease and tuberculosis. In hogs, it’s cholera; in sheep, scabies; and in dogs, rabies.
The way to avoid trouble is to call the office of the State Veterinarian, or see one of his veterinarians if you want to buy or sell animals out of state.
