Paul Walker .. 1 4 All the men-candidates were wrrte-in^, except D. C. Updike, whose name appeared on the ballot. No opposition to the woman government came into existence until Monday morning, June 9, just 24 hours ahead of the election. The votes cast for the men —on such a abort notice ahead of Voting time-—indicate plainly that the opinions in the town sure divided on the subject of feminine government. v
IA study of the votes will show that Mayor Dorothy CL Davit', polled a vote equal to Mrs. Milton Hawkins, who bolds the lowest •core among the council members.
Mrs. J. W. Price and Mis. J. W. Critzer were accorded the highest ^totals of 78 each, with Mrs. C. J. Miller and Miss Ruby Jenkins In dose second and third places, 76 snd 72. Mrs. Field Benton, new member on the council, polled a vote of 67, with Mrs. Milton Mawkins just four votss below her, 68.
C. T. Bruce, who was drafted by 42 voters of the town, spent the day at home. He had stated several weeks ago, when candidates were filing for election, that he would not run, but when the voters went to him and asked him would he accept the office, he agreed, saying that he would take no part in the election. A write-in vote of 4 to 6 against an incumbent was a flattering testimony of the high esteem with which Mr. Bruce is held in the community.
