GARDEN SPOTS *
The garden spots of the world are small communities. They have their faults — goodness knows!— but their values far out-weigh the deficits.
Take Sperryville as an example. There are thousands of small communities in the 48 states .that compare in size, but you can bet your bottom nickel there isn't another community exactly like Sperryville. For its population, there is a larger proportion of “characters” than one could find (without a pretty diligent search.
The community has a working spirit that couldi well be copied. When the “Sperryvillians” (and that's what, they call themselves) decide to work together on a community project, someone starts * as leader, and it makes no difference who he is, the rest of the community falls in line to do its part. They tease and joke with each other; sometimes they almost come to blows; but let a bit of trouble 'befall some member of the community, and everyone shows up to see if he can help out.
Flint Hill is another community with the co-operative spirit. It can be exhibited in numbers of instances, with one of the easiest to see being that of the co-operative street lighting. They don’t leave the job to a few citizens; they all work together.
