Bill Stout, in a book about himself, recalls his early newspaper days when he had an .office close to Tyler MacWhor^er, the cartoonist, and Miss Beaumont, society editor.
“She was a conscientious, precise little woman,” Stout says. “One day something disturbed her greatly and through the door came an exasp perated 'Oh, Heavens !’ Without looking up from his work Tyler boomed out, ‘Miss Beaumont, if you must, will you please say “Oh, Hell” instead of “Oh, Heavens!” It is twice as expressive and not half so profane.’ ”
