Dear Congressman Harrison:
This is to advise you that an in, vestigation has disclosed * that the fourth class post office at Este§, Rappahannock County, Virginia, may properly be discontinued. The salary for the postmaster is $574.46 per annum, including longevity compensation. He receives an allowance of $86.17 for rent, light •and fuel. The receipts of the office for the calendar year 1952 were $144.34. Eighteen families receive and dispatch mail through this post office and they could receive adequate service by a rural carrier operating from Castleton, Virginia. To provide service to all patrons it is proposed to extend the rural route approximately 4.30 miles. This extension was discussed with the postmaster and rural carrier at Castleton and Iboth agreed that the extension was ^practicable and could be easily haitdlThe
postmaster stated that some of the patrons of the office had approached him and suggested that the route be extended as now proposed. In order that you may be properly informed, you are advised that the Department contemplates the discontinuance of the post office at Estes....- • —

Ass’t. Postmaster General Mr. Harrison has sent a copy of the letter to the postmaster at Estes, Thomas H. Utz, and has assured him that he will seek fair and nonpartisan consideration of any facts which, might “tend to contradict the claim of the Post Office Department that equal service could be provided the patrons at an appreciable saving."
