This statement comes as result of a 10 year study by Dr. Pauline Mack. It was found in this study that the average teen-ager betweeen 13 and 20 years of age is very often underfed and undernourished. Statistics prove that their health and future well being is being harmed by poor eating habits.
1. Only about % of group were getting enough energy food to keep the body running effeciently. Energy food, comes from protein, fat and carbohydrates. Proteins are in meat, eggs, milk, dairy products. Carbohydrates is found in vegetables, fruits, and cereals. Fats are found in nuts, salad oils, butter and cream.
2. Nearly half failed to get enouglf protein foods to build and repair body tissues.
3. There was a shortage of calcium and phosphorus needed for good teeth and bones which is found in dairy products, green leafy vegetables and eggs. 4. Poor growth, no resistance to fatigue and poor complexions were found where diets were short in butter, cooking fats and oils.
5. Vitamin shortage caused unsatisfactory growth, nervous condi1 tion and skin conditions. Best sources wre pork, beef, whole grain cereals, green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, tomatoes, etc:
Changes needed were in proper food sldfction and proper cooking rather than highly expensive foods.
