Mr. Harrison of Virginia. That is not correct. In one county they do eliminate 16 post offices, but you get 4 rural carriers in place of them. I maintain that this service should be considered only from the public viewpoint and not from the political viewpoint.

Mrs. St. George. I have great sympathy for the gentleman, but I would like to tell him that I also represent 7 S rural area in the great State of New York and that many of my fourth-class post offices have been eliminated. They have been consolidated in most instances under Democratic postmasters who are still in office. My complaint is that quite a few whom I consider very worthy Republicans are being thrown out of jobs, and these little offices are being consolidated under a Democratic postmaster. So you see we all have the same complaint, depending on whose ox is being gored.

Mr. Harrison of Virginia. May I ask the distinguished gentlewoman a question? Does she agreee with the majority leader that ffiecivil-servTce laws should be repealed and that all present postmasters should be discharged?
