The Prayer of Intercession

John 17

By Rev. G. M. Profit! The scriptures speak of Jesus praying upon various occasions, but here iA His intecessory prayer we have a special place of honor. We are privileged to listen in upon the conversation between Jesus and the Father, while Jesus is in 'the very shadow of the cross. He is not asking for favors here, but is in communion with the Father expressing the desires of His heart. In expressing these desires and determination to the Father we are admitted into the heart, the mind will of Jesus. He lays His heart bare to the Father.

The movement of this communion is 3 fold: verses 1-5 concern Himself ; verses 6-19 He is praying for those about Him and 20 on, He is praying for the whole church, that is down through the ages.

His Desires were that He might Glorify the Father above every other desire. Even the saving of me is for the glory of God. He expresses' his desire to return to the Father and His „ former Glory, but also states that it must be by way of the cross, verse 5. He is here praying for the cross because it is by the cross He will put life at the disposal of humanity according to the Fathers purpose and will.
